3D Frenzy, tonight at Babylon

Sorry for the late notice, sounds like a cool party tonight at Babylon for the Electric Fields festival which is going until Sunday

Who says cool stuff doesn’t happen in Ottawa?

After a crazy couple of months of non-stop work and a shamelessly-short holiday, I am back on the streets of Ottawa looking for stylin’ people. I went to Mercury Lounge on Saturday night and came across these two cute boys … loved their cozy mash up of plaids and stripes. Jesse and Steye are from the Netherlands, here participating in a project called “In a Cabin With”. The premise is Dutch musicians travel to inspiring places on the planet, hole up in a “cabin” with local musicians and write a bunch of music. Steye and Jesse, along with Philippe LaFraniere and Zakari Frantz will showcase their creations at Mercury on February 9th. And all the finished songs are available to download free from the “In a Cabin” website. SO COOL…’nuff said! www.inacabinwith.com

J’en peu plus – musique 2008

It just dawned on me that my university GPA would’ve been much higher if I didn’t spend so much time at the library discussing music over homework and scrolling through music blogs instead of Virtual Campus. Oh well, I ended up graduating with a good GPA and a HUGE music collection. So huge in fact that my Macbook Pro went from 100GB to a mere 12GB. Thank you Morisset library for 1) the inspiration and 2) bringing people together during the most social time of the year, finals. I will forever be thankful to you and to the University of Ottawa’s disastrous VPN client.

So as 2008 comes to a close, I begin thinking back at all the songs that I obsessed over throughout the year. These are the tunes that kept up with the loop button on the ipod (which likes to freeze on shuffle mode and ends up stopping during a great tune, leaving you incapable of completing your magnificient dance moves).

Compiling this list also made me realize that I listen to way too many remixes (Arty are you nodding in approval yet?). Sometimes I forget what the original sounds like altogether. This list is seriously, in the words of George Michael, for the feet. Please note, some are old school songs but were on repeat nonetheless! Also note that when reading through this list, make sure your body parts are coordinated and 100% focused because they’ll all be taking part in the dance marathon you’ll be participating in afterwards. Without further adue, here’s the list that’s more essential than the BBC radio 1 mixes. I would like to dedicate this to Bear, Arty and Dre, all who have strong connections to this list even though we are all at various corners across the world.

My feet require top of the line beats, compris?

fleetwood-mac-rumours1Gypsies ended up being a topic of a delightful conversation at my workplace. I’ve always been fascinated by them and got unnecessarily excited when Vivienne Westwood used gypsies in a runway show. I, however, am unable to explain my fascination, it just is. In celebration of the gypsy mention, I decided to listen to Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac. If you’re not familiar with the song, you might have heard it mashed up on the track Let Me See You by Girl Talk (come to think of it, Girl Talk mashes up so much Fleetwood Mac, Overtime from Night Ripper samples Tell Me Lies). I really like Fleetwood Mac. Something about their songs makes you press repeat over and over again. Especially Never Forget…that song fills me up with so much nostalgia that I end up doing things I may regret the next day. Guilty.

Any way, I decided to search the song on hypem (for potential remixes to make my feet two step) and I found one remixed by none other than Cut Copy. This means the remix has to be amazing because all Cut Copy remixes are, sorry to sound repetitive here, AMAZING. My gut feeling was right, I’m really hooked on it…Fred Falke and Lo-Fi-Fnk styles.

girl-talk-755754Alongside the Fleetwood Mac taking over all the playtime on my ipod, there’s another song I’ve been heavily addicted to lately because it sounds so good and I want you to get addicted to it too (Bear are you reading this?). It’s called Paris by Friendly Fires featuring Au Revoir Simone and remixed by Aeroplane. If you haven’t heard it yet, time to get your toes in with the groove.

A Study in Plaid

From contributor: PAYTON– Payton.kennedy [at] gmail [dot] com

I was at the Elmdale Tavern this weekend for The Fiftymen. Great show … and great style! I didn’t notice until looking at the shots at the end of the evening that all of my subjects were wearing plaid. Expected at alt-country/rock show I suppose but I love how they all wore it in their own unique way, and as comfortably as well … an old, plaid shirt.

Boytech!!!

p1050167Facts about Boytech before proceeding:

– These boys performed at L’Oreal Fashion Week

– One of the twosome is dating the beautiful Sarah Taylor from Much Music

– Their catchphrase is “if you got it, hit it.”

Boytech sort of remind me of The Presets (look wise) and the way they begun their set, the sound resonated a bit like Yuksek (Little Dirty Trip Vicarious Bliss Remix anyone?)

I had the opportunity to watch Boytech, under the House of Helder label, perform at The Social on Queen Street West.

p1050176Before the show started, I went outside and was offered a banana by the artist relations manager to satisfy my hunger (it was delicious thanks!). While chowing down this delicious banana, Stefania from Toronto Textstyles asked if she could take my picture for her blog. And yes I was wearing those pants I was telling you all about! I was honoured, I guess I’m officially a Torontonian now.

Back inside, Boytech is ready to go on. These two are real men: tall, muscular, and not afraid to wear hot pants that show their, ahem…package. So yeah, they got it and they hit it. Boytech also uses props like dumbbells while performing. While one sings, the other works out. At first glance, you may think it’s Right Said Fred trying to take over the North American market yet again, however, it’s not. Boytech are trying to be humourous all in the name of fun, Right Said Fred are to be taken as serious artists. Right, hehe.

p1050175For example, here’s some of Boytech’s humour. Their myspace bio reads:

“Former Ivy League rowers, Jack and Chris were destined for greatness. You’ve probably heard of the “Wild Wind” scandal. They were superb athletes. Every coach they ever had said so except for one. Yale Head Coach Burnaby Dupuis made it his personal mission during their enrollment to ruin the gifted and very muscular twosome. He succeeded, having their medals stripped on the basis of steroid abuse. Desperate to clear their names, Jack and Chris kidnapped Coach Dupuis and tortured him to near death thus exonerating themselves, but were promptly charged and sent to a Youth Reform Camp. During confinement they developed a passion for music. Now the duo makes its home in this most liberal of cities and can often be seen running or rowing along Toronto’s waterfront.”

p1050172Classic!

With songs titled “Fuck me” and lyrics regarding STD’s, Boytech are sure to garner the attention of people, and your feet will surely appreciate their sound.
Love the boots boys.

Fritz Helder and The Phantoms

fotobooth21Having moved to Toronto just a few days ago, I was eager to begin networking. I had emailed blogger and fashion illustrator Danielle Meder last month letting her know I am moving and would like to get involved in the scene. Bloggers are the best. Why? Because they, unlike many people these days, respond to your emails. This is something I try to live by, to answer everyone between 24-48 hours.

Well I emailed Danielle again Sunday letting her know I’m here and she sends me an invite to the “Lagerfeld Lady” single + video release party for this band called Fritz Helder and the Phantoms at Strangelove in Little Italy. One problem – I was supposed to confirm with the publicist Sunday, it’s now Monday, so I try my luck and email her any way. Luckily, she turns out to be one of the nicest and most helpful publicists I’ve ever met and grants me access to this jam (yes I used the word jam). She also lets me know that Pastel Supernova and Diego Superstar from the band are originally from Ottawa!

So I dress up (luckily I did) and head out solo. Now, I don’t know what Danielle looks like because I didn’t think of Facebook stalking her or anything so this was going to be a challenge. I look around, then I run into the publicist who describes Danielle to me. I find Danielle and her entourage. Blogger Anita Clarke sits on her left, designer Philip Sparks on her right, and to his left Now Toronto’s Fashion Editor Andrew Sardone. Danielle mentions the firm I’ll be working at and I am happy to know most of them know the company well.

I like the location because it’s small and intimate and you have the opportunity to chat with everyone.

I notice cameras are all over the band and I can’t help but admire their style. The lead singer is wearing a pair of turquoise April 77’s (I was wearing my April’s too) and I was tempted to strike up a conversation about how great these jeans are but refrained myself. I kept staring at them for a bit and realized how much their look reminds me of Hercules and Love Affair.

The video starts playing, the Hercules and Love Affair vibe is growing but I see a little more of Prince (à la Erotic City) in the lead singer’s persona. It’s original and fresh, I’m enjoying it (you can too, see the video below).

Danielle introduces me to more people, including designer Nada Shepherd (who just showed at L’Oreal Fashion Week) and Gail McInnes (I spelt your name right this time…are you reading this?) Gail’s personality and personal style is great, she’s also one of those people who responds to your emails. Another thing about Gail? She knows everyone so she introduces me to the owner of Stylus Canada and Fabric Magazine, who, tum tum tum, studied at Carleton University (does everyone have a tiny attachment to Ottawa around here?).

fritzAfter chatting for a bit I head out, having thoroughly enjoyed the band and meeting all these great people. I look forward to more events like this, and seeing Justice at Circa tonight.

Lo-Fi-Fnk

Although I’m not too fond of the song’s title, it’s still amazing – I’m totally hooked on it. I’m talking about Swedish duo Lo-Fi-Fnk’s song “Want U”.

Go to hypem.com and listen to it, I’ve been playing it over and over for the past week and hope not to get sick of it (still not sick of Fred Falke’s remix of Golden Cage, it’s been on loop since like June).

Lo-Fi-Fnk seems to have a more grown up sound on this track (featured in the latest Kitsune compilation), unlike their album Boylife where they sounded really really young.

If you haven’t heard of them, I suggest you introduce yourself, you might end up falling in love with the synthesizer.

Forced to live like it’s a curfew, translation means I love you

The organizers of the Ottawa Folk Festival managed to do it, bring Broken Social Scene to Ottawa that is. Every band that is worthy usually skips Ottawa as if it doesn’t happen to be Canada’s capital but this time around, BSS (insert heart) came. I have been a huge fan for awhile, their music really calms me and I dive back into nostalgia when I hear it, so for me, it was all fine and dandy to get eaten alive by some mosquitoes waiting for fresh blood at Brittania Beach.

First, Brendan Canning is such a babe. Yeah, I just said it, okay? Hit the Wall is amazing. I am hooked on that track. And Amy Millan was there, how sweet is that? I love Amy…like absolutely adore her. I really wish she played her only good song from her solo album “Skinny Boy”. She did, however, do “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” justice. Do you think Emily’s pissed?

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to immerse myself in the crowd and took 0 street style pictures. I actually did not happen to take my eyes off the stage at all. My explanation was that I was way too into the music, plus it was a tad bit cold and those mosquito bites were in unreachable places (i.e. on my knees and I wear quite the tight pair of pants so itching was hard).

Any way, we were pretty close to the action so enjoy some shots below.

Katy Perry’s Bad Rap

Text: Emily P.

Emily P. is a contributor for Ottawa Street Style

At its fourth week at the top of the Billboards, Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” is nothing but a hit and success for this new artist. She is beautiful and can actually sing, check out her live performance, “Mannequin” on Buzznet.com. I wonder, though, why this soulful, smart and, yes, catchy song wasn’t her first choice for a first single? Perhaps because it doesn’t make the cut in the club scene; or maybe her witty analogies and heartfelt words wouldn’t be understood by some, but then I realized it didn’t quite have the same potential.

With the addition of KhaK Black and a completely new, re-vamped music video, this song has been turned into a seedy soft porn flick with a whole lot of unrealistically choreographed make-out moments. No doubt Katy Perry’s first experience with a woman provoked such a song but she mentioned Chapstick, not lingerie, and the first time I heard the original I thought it was innocent and kind of funny.

Suddenly, KhaK chimes in, “Give me a minute, I’m ready to fuck” and this song changes completely. What we have now is yet another rap video, chalk full of attractive women dancing around a not-so-attractive man. The words “You’s a bad bitch” come slithering out of his mouth and anything liberating or even whimsical about this song is now demeaning with a chauvinistic message. Hopefully, though, this version won’t make the airwaves, as it really adds nothing more to the song, other than telling these girls to do something they’re clearly already doing.

Bat for Lashes – Whats a girl to do?

Text: Naj Peterson

Naj Peterson is a contributor for Ottawa Street Style.

A friend sent me this music video last week, and after countless viewings on You Tube, I have yet to tire from its haunting beauty and tapestry of sounds. The video for ‘Whats a girl to do?’ by British-born vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Natasha Khan, more famously known as Bats for Lashes, is brazenly stylish and utterly captivating.  Director Dougal Wilson perfectly captures the song’s sinister and entrancing nature, as eerie mascot-headed bmxers pop, wheelie and clap hands in sync with the electronic beats and ghostly strings of this dark fairy tale.

Inspiration – Goldfrapp

I love Goldfrapp! I mean look at what she’s wearing. Such a classic babe.

In other news, Cut Copy and The Presets will stop by Canada on their tour, however, they are skipping Ottawa. Quelle surprise! You must travel to Toronto or Montreal in order to catch them. Quelle malheur!

Lada mercy…DIPLO – Disorganized 5 year anniversary

It’s been 5 years since Bank Street has become its transformation into Williamsburg thanks to the Disorganized crew. Can you believe it? With indie culture’s latest movement that really isn’t hard to believe, so let’s move on to details.

For the birthday party, THAT crowd decided to make DIPLO the headliner at Heaven, and this was a show the city couldn’t afford to miss because let’s face it, no good acts play here any way. Although the tickets were pricey, the show was well worth (for me any way), to sleep 3 hours (I do suffer from insomnia), get dressed, be at work for 8am, write a test I had to do well in for work, fall asleep during this test, and realize that when’s there’s 10 minutes left, I left 15 questions blank. Royal. It’s all good, cause lada mercy, I danced at DIPLO!

The show was good. There were a lot of well dressed people whom I did NOT approach because I was busy busting some dance moves that put people to shame at the club, but there were also some people that either a) tried too hard or b) have a disability in putting outfits together. I can’t decide between the latter and the former!!!

The other thing is, Diplo’s beats, sort of like Fred Falke but Freddy makes you dance a tad bit more, can make anyone (even people with two left feet) MOVE. So why on earth were there tons of people standing like statues and NOT submitting to the beat? Why why why???

I was confused about these two girls. Did you dress up like that because you actually thought it looked good or did you dress up like that because you thought it would be funny to celebrate Halloween in July? Which one is it?

THE HABIT HOSTS E.T. RELEASE CONCERT – AUGUST 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 15, 2008
Contact: Darren Rogers, The Habit  (613) 866-7412

THE HABIT HOSTS E.T. RELEASE CONCERT – AUGUST 1

(OTTAWA) – Award-winning pop-soul band The Habit will host an ET (Extended Tease) Concert at Zaphod Beeblebrox in Ottawa on Friday, August 1.  The concert will celebrate the release of three new songs posted today on The Habit’s website, http://www.myspace.com/thehabitca.   These early studio cuts are a free preview of material for a new album to be released later in 2008.

The new songs were recorded live-off-the-floor, and include two originals and a cover of Please Don’t Stop the Music (which is a web-only release and will not be on the new album).

The ET follows the 2007 release of The Habit’s full-length debut, The Sacred and The Profane, which has been riding high on the Canadian campus radio charts from Kamloops to Saskatoon and Antigonish.  The new songs showcase the band’s three singers, who take turns singing lead and otherwise harmonize.  The material also highlights the fact that The Habit’s violinist and saxophonist are – for the first time – living in the same city, and writing their parts together.  The new songs alternate seamlessly between swelling string sections and sputtering funk horns.

Tara Holloway will open the show at Zaphods on August 1.  The Habit will host a Toronto ET Release at the Savannah Room on August 9.

U.F.O.

I like Dizzee’s voice starting up the beat and then when his voice makes a come back in the middle of the track. Fazhands (www.myspace.com/fazhands), a fan of the site from the UK, sent me a track in order get his music out there to you, the readers of this blog!

It’s called U.F.O. and for that Fazhands I give you props, because I feel like I am in outer space when I am listening to this!

I checked out some more tracks on the MySpace –  and they are quite dancy. So if you’re into that funky house type of feel and you want to “kick it” at the club, check out Fazhands.

Sorry but it’s over between us

ugh, you were in the Metro on Friday, your song played on Gossip Girl, and your style is BLAH! Out of all your songs, I only like two. I much prefer it when you remix. You have a cool band name but you are pissing me off! How am I not supposed to feel nostalgic while listening to a song that contains samples of video game music I used to play as a young child?

Love love,

Ottawa Street Style
