Art of Fashion

A little while back, I was invited to attend the Art of Fashion design competition during Nuit Blanche (yes yes I’m behind on posting this, I know, I know). The annual competition gives 10 up-and-coming Canadian designers the chance to showcase six unique garments interpreting the show’s theme, La Belle Epoque, with the opportunity to win cash prizes and gain valuable industry exposure.  The judging panel, which included Sarah Casselman from FASHION Magazine, Farley Chatto from FGI, and David Clemmer from Judy Inc, will select the show’s “Most Promising Designer”, while guests and shoppers will cast their votes for Best Exhibitat the accompanying trunk show, where they will also have the opportunity to purchase unique and Canadian-made couture fashion and accessories.

“Art of Fashion’s annual design competition offers a unique opportunity for up-and-coming Canadian designers, who don’t have the kind of support that is available to designers in American and European fashion capitals,” says the organization’s founder, Michelle Planche. “Besides the ten finalists who participate in the design competition, the trunk show features up to twenty additional designers, and gives the public a chance to pick up exclusive apparel and accessories.”

The ten finalists were:

  1. Georgia Varelas
  2. Mark Aguilar
  3. Fuy-Na Tse
  4. Corinne Monique
  5. Natalia Cuervo
  6. Stefania Ayoub
  7. Julianna Carlucci
  8. Amber Watkins
  9. Rebecca Milward
  10. Stephanie Mahseredjian

I ran into the winner of last year’s competition and Ottawa native Mikhail (or Misha as I know him) Moudrakovski who is currently completing his fashion design degree at Ryerson University. Good to know an Ottawa native has gone on to win this competition!

Ottawa Fashion Week: Day 3

On Day 3, I caught Adrian Wu (keep an eye on him), Kania and Jessica Biffi (big improvement from collection at LGFW SS ’10).

Thoughts on Fashion Week: I’m a supporter of the local scene and I feel like I personally worked hard in helping mold this scene. Because of this, I feel it is important for people to come out and support any fashion related events in the city. In the past two years, Ottawa Fashion Week has undergone a lot of improvements. Even a fashion writer/photographer friend that came to cover the show from Toronto was impressed by some things, however, we both agreed that there’s still work to be done. It is easier for me to understand the difficulty in putting together a show in Ottawa more than she would as her experience has mostly been within the Toronto fashion scene and I can attest that you get used to LGFW, drunken speeches aside. It’s not easy putting a show together in this city for a multitude of reasons. Since I’ve been away, it’s obvious the city is slowly adjusting and accepting of the fact that there is a small fashion scene. I mean both Urban Outfitters and Zara have seen the potential in the market and opened up stores downtown.

But there’s always one thing to keep in mind: shows like these (when I worked on it this was my personal purpose anyway) are not meant to compete with other Canadian cities, they are merely providing a platform to local or national designers in order for them to explore/move onto larger fashion weeks within the country or move on to the US or Europe.

Congratulations to all those involved in putting together Ottawa Fashion Week SS ’11 collections!
