Living with Architecture:

These paintings deal with architecture, and how we live with it. In my younger days I wanted to become an architect, it seemed like such a powerful profession. When I found out that math and logic would be such an integral component in an architect’s career I dropped the idea and started to use it as an inspiration in my painting. Our world is what we have made it over the years, but we take our surroundings for granted. We don’t often think about the work that when into making the world we see. In these paintings I am attempting to show how invisible the work of the world has become by making the buildings almost transparent and raw. The characters in my paintings go about ignoring the past that is built up around them. They play, shop, fight work and walk amongst history without paying it a second thought. People are living, they are doing things, and the viewer is invited to watch them live. Those who ignore their place in history are, after all, destined to live. For those of you who are not in Ottawa, I will put up all the paintings after the show starts here: http://www.semiquestion.com/paintings/exhibit/LivingWithArchitecture.htm

Combat Paper presented by the Ottawa School of Art and Gallery 101

Ottawa School of Art and Gallery 101 present:

COMBAT PAPER COMES TO OTTAWA!!!

Combat Paper

The Ottawa School of Art and Gallery 101 will be hosting a unique art project on November 29 and 30th.

Combat Paper tells the story of the soldier, the Marine – the men and the women – and their journeys within the military service in a time of war. These stories, expressed through performance, poetry and hand-made paper, are the basis for this project. The goal is to utilize art as a means to help veterans reconcile their personal experiences as well as challenge the traditional narrative surrounding service, honour and the military culture. Veterans use their uniforms worn in combat to create cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beaten into pulp and formed into sheets of paper. Veterans use the transformative process of papermaking to reclaim their uniform as art and begin to embrace their experiences as a soldier in war.

Through ongoing participation in the papermaking process, combat papermakers are attempting to progress from creating works specific to their military experiences to expressing a broader vision on militarism and society. The work reflects both the anger of the past and hope for the future. Through this collaboration between civilians and veterans, a much-needed conversation is generated regarding our responsibilities to the returned veteran and an understanding of the dehumanizing effects of warfare.

Two free Combat Paper events will take place in Ottawa.

During the day on Saturday, November 29 and Sunday, November 30, the Combat Papermaking workshop will take place in the Ottawa School of Art printmaking studio. The workshop is free and is open to all who are interested. Registration is limited to 12 participants. On Saturday evening (November 29), the Combat Paper Readings and Performance will take place at Gallery 101 (301 ½ Bank Street) beginning at 7:00 pm. The Readings and Performance are free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration required for this part of the event.

The Dinner Jacket

I heard about this magazine last month but did not get the opportunity to post anything about it. I got another email telling me to check out their October issue and I did.

The two ladies who are behind this (Ashley and Justyna) are very nice and seem to be on the right track. They also answer emails, that’s a plus as many people don’t and this is not a good sign. They are on time with their material and are networking well. Ashley and Justyna also managed to come up with a great name for their magazine.

I scanned through the content and I am quite fond of it. The photo shoots get better every issue and I am sure this magazine will eventually be a really cool online concept. The magazine also has a lot of material and it’s stuff I actually want to read about because it is sticking to local and national coverage.

Usually, online magazines are difficult to navigate but this Z Mag is easy to go through, making the online browsing quite simple. Check out their latest issue at http://viewer.zmags.com/showmag.php?mid=wqhfdq&preview=1&_x=1#/page0/

Make sure to also take a look at their blog for more information about The Dinner Jacket.

My only advice is to make the text a little more legible when it’s on a darker background (page 14, 53, 60-61) and to use different models. I would also like to see more work with local talent in terms of stylists, fashion photographers and designers (feel free to contact me for some resources).

Good luck ladies!
